GIS brings the ability to display and work with information based on its real-world spatial relationships. Using GIS tools even just to present your research can make your results clearer and your research significantly more accessible. This can be done in a number of ways (www.esri.com) and is done, among other things, with thematic maps.
You just need to have a connection to the location (coordinates, information about the region, district, city or your own location breakdown). Think you have an idea, but don't know how to do it? Contact the expert guarantor.
PUBLISHING MAPS VIA TEMPLATES
In addition to basic map publication, the FEM GIS Portal provides the ability to publish simple web applications through preconfigured templates. These can be used very easily "out of the box" without the need for programming, but they can also be customized for specific and complex use cases. Various types of uses and examples of templates can be found here (Esri Story Map).
Classic uncustomized templates include, for example, a classic story map style presentation, or a short overview story map.
ADD-ON INSIGHTS
The server license includes the ability to use the Insights tool, which allows the use of statistical functions and their combination with tools for geographic analysis. The output consists of interactive graphs and maps. Everything is done in a web application without the need for programming.
You can see an example of the insights workbook here. The statistics can also be used in templates and other applications - for example in a story map.
GEOGRAPHIC DATA
The Faculty of Economics and Management owns a variety of data that you can use for your research and study purposes. In the future, the data will be accessible through services on the FEM GIS Portal. If you are interested in raw data for use in analyses on desktop workstations, please first consult with the technical garant for the reason for your use and then make your own arrangements with the technical guarantor to receive the data.
The following datasets are available:
- Arc500 vector data, the data contains current statistical information from the CSO linked to administrative units.
- Digital Relief Model of the Czech Republic 5th generation (DMR 5G) from ČÚZK on the scale of the whole Czech Republic.
- Orthophoto map from TopGIS (they make e.g. orthophotos for mapy.cz), data format: JPEG 200, continuous cladding 1:5000. Less than five years old (in 2018).
GIS SOFTWARE AVAILABLE TO BORROW
Do you need to create a map for your dissertation or research project? All employees of CZU are entitled to obtain a license for ArcGIS Pro / ArcMap software. The licenses are for research and teaching at CZU only - you must confirm that you will not use them otherwise by signing your name when you receive the license key. You can request the license key from Mrs. Cestrová at the Information Services Center in room E250. You can then download the software from the internet and install it on your device.
