Students of the Bachelor’s degree study programmes are choosing their thesis topic during the 3rd semester. Students of the Master’s degree study programmes are choosing their thesis topic during the 1st semester. Students usually choose from topics that has been offered by thesis supervisors from FEM’s departments and apply for a tender for one of these topics. The student’s choice of a topic is done through http://is.czu.cz (in Student's portal > List of topics > Final thesis topics > List of topics > a button for application for the tender is available in the detail view of the topic) accordingly to the FEM’s Academic Calendar. A detailed guidebook how to choose a topic is available at the time of choice on the homepage of UIS after login. The list of topics is accessible in UIS even before the time of choice; Bachelor’s thesis topics can be accessed here and Master’s thesis topics here. The list of the topics is updated continuously until last days before the supposed date of choice.
Students choose the topic accordingly to their study programme and the academic specialization of the departments. Furthermore, the topic should suit the specialization and specific interests of the students, a specific interest of a company might be also considered if students wish to cooperate with any. Furthermore, a consideration of a practical application of the chosen topic can lead to increase of motivation. Equally important in the selection of the thesis topic is the choice of the thesis supervisor who will play the role of the academic expert, supervisor, guide, coordinator, coach and eventually the evaluator of the thesis.
If the student is not successful at the thesis topic tender, the student can apply for another tender for a different topic, but only after the supervisor has declined your unsuccessful application electronically, in the system. If there are no more tenders available, the student may seek the supervisor individually among the supervisors, who have accepted only few students according to the above-mentioned overview of topics.
We strongly recommend the students to follow the above mentioned procedure and time schedule for the submission of bachelor's and master's theses.
The collaboration of the student with the supervisor begins with the creation of the final thesis assignment in the UIS. After the supervisor establishes the student's final thesis assignment, the icon of the Final thesis (an icon of a book) will be displayed at the student’s UIS (the Student’s Portal) for the given study. If the student does not see the icon of the final thesis even if he/she has been appointed by the supervisor to a topic, the supervisor has not created the assignment in the system. It is necessary to contact the supervisor to have the assignment created. Students proceed with their final thesis in accordance with the instructions given in the assignment, which is prepared by the supervisor with the student’s agreement - or the supervisor may give the student the rights to adapt the assignment in UIS by him/herself. The assignment of the thesis is created in the UIS and must be approved (with an electronic signature) by the Head of the Department to which the thesis is assigned by mid-May, then by the guarantor of the particular Study programme and by the Dean of the FEM. In order for the approval process to be forwarded to the Head of the Department, the guarantor of the particular Study programme and to the Dean, it is first necessary to approve the assignment by the supervisor.
The supervisor also gives the credits for the final thesis work progress. Creation of the assignment and part of the literature review by the end of June is the prerequisite for granting the first credit for the final thesis work progress (the Bachelor’s thesis 1 course is in the 4th semester of bachelor's study, the Master’s thesis 1 course is in the 2nd semester of the master’s study). In addition to the three final thesis credits, the supervisor also gives a credit for passing an internship related to the final thesis research.
The student receives a second credit for submitting a complete literature review by the end of October. The practical part of the work should be then submitted by the end of February. The student obtains the last, third, credit for submitting a fully completed Bachelor's Thesis by mid-March, and for submitting a fully completed Master's Thesis by the end of March. It is always necessary to take into account the specific individual requirements for submitting the Thesis from your supervisor.
